Wine has been a part of Markus's life since he was a little boy. Today, he's a wine lover with a conscience, committed to high-quality, sustainable winemaking and a minimal ecological impact. He and his wife Liz make a seriously dynamic duo, with Markus toiling tirelessly in the vineyards to craft exceptional, environmentally friendly wines and Liz performing near-wizardry in the kitchen as she whips up special recipes tailored to the specific characteristics of each of Markus’s products.

What do you love most about your job?
I love seeing vines grow! I think it’s absolutely amazing that one small plant can emerge from winter dormancy, stretching spring shoots towards the sky, collecting the sun’s energy, and converting it to sweet sugars and complex molecules, ultimately giving us delicious wine. I love it that I get to shepherd my wine from budbreak to bottle. I love the contrast of being outdoors in the elements with my vines and indoors in my cool, wet cellar with my wines.
What’s your favorite place to eat, drink, or play?
Sant Carles de la Rapita! It's the little town where my mother’s family comes from. We visit it every summer. It sits at the juncture of coastal hills, the Ebro Delta, and the Mediterranean Sea. The hills are covered with olive trees for oil, the delta grows rice for paella, and the sea gives us its bounty for fish that flavors every dish of our village. Another favorite is brunch at the Towne House at Wine & Roses in Lodi. A more relaxed setting is hard to find.
If you were throwing a dinner party and could invite anyone, who would it be?
I would invite the wonderful, hard-working, dedicated individuals within our company who have shared our vision for crafting Iberian wines in California. They have become our extended family, with whom we want to grow old.
Who’s your palate icon?
I don’t have a palate icon. I seek what I like. And I like to engage with people who seek what they like. I do, however, have a few industry icons. They deeply influenced me at the start of my wine path, and they include André Tchelistcheff of Beaulieu Vineyards and Robert Mondavi.
Who or what do you consider your biggest influence?
My father. Despite all the hurdles placed before him and all the hardships he encountered in his life, he instilled in me a curiosity and optimism to break boundaries and explore.
